Stories
DARLENE
Darlene arrived at the shelter depressed and defeated. She had suffered a devastating breakup and had nowhere else to turn. The staff provided her with the support she needed to begin rebuilding her life. Within a short time, she was saving the money she earned from 3 part-time jobs. She worked on a household budget and began searching for apartments. Today, Darlene is working, living, and thriving in the community.
NANCY AND DEWEY
Self-determination, a sense of purpose, and love helped Dewey and Nancy stabilize and move beyond homelessness. Each facing a similar history of substance recovery and family instability, Nancy and Dewey’s lives converged when they met at the shelter. Dewey started helping around the shelter and Nancy volunteered to cook for the outreach program. Before long, both were employed at SOS as caretakers for the supportive housing facility where they now live.
Hunter
After living in a tent for three months, Hunter sought support at the emergency shelter. Having battled depression all his life, he knew he needed help with everyday tasks to be in independent housing. With the help of staff, Hunter now has an apartment that offers him ongoing mental health support and recently started a new full-time job.
